Post-3: DOAJ collection

Dear All,

today you are going to get acquainted with an online collection of open access journals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_access_journal) in linguistics. Your task will be to do the following:

1. Choose one of the jourmals with open access from them directory at http://doaj.org/.

2. When in the directory, search for Linguistics and you will get about 30 000 hits. Look through the first couple of pages of hits and choose a journal that seems to be more interesting. In the thread provide its brief description, indicating its specific area of interest and giving some basic information about it. The purpose of doing it is to have a collection of different journals which you can use for your research.

3. Find an article connected with the topic of your course paper in the journal you have chosen and write its summary. Include a brief explanation of why you think this article can be useful. Add a couple of questions you have as the result of reading the article you will have summarised.

  15. The journal I have chosen is “Vestnik Volgogradskogo Gosudarstvennogo Universiteta” which one can access over there: https://bit.ly/2PUAFdT
This journal specifies on language theory and intercultural communication and contains articles written in Russian and English. The date when it was added to DOAJ is 24 Dec 2015 and the date of last updating is 26 Dec 2015.
In this journal I have chosen the article “COMMUNICATIVE CATEGORIES IN THE COGNITIVE-DISCURSIVE PARADIGM” (https://doaj.org/article/3d2ef77b7d4b4569987a3f175f45409e) written by Svetlana S. Takhtarova because the topic of my course paper is connected with the concept of language categories. This article can be useful for me as the author differentiates communicative categories from grammatical categories, placing them on the top of categorial hierarchy. In this article,S.S.Takhtarova analyzes features of the phenomenon of “communicative category” on the example of the category of mitigation.
First, the author gives a definition of the communicative category proposed by I.A. Sternin, according to which communicative categories are the most common ideas which systemise principles and norms of communication and determine one’s communicative behavior.
Next, she draws our attention to the necessity of distinguishing between communicative categories and communicative concepts that are often confused.S.S. Takhtarova expresses solidarity with the opinion of E.I. Sheigal that unlike concepts which are expressed verbally in the discourse and contain its thematic core, categories appear in the discourse implicitly, defining its character and basic principles of the organization.
Then, she illustrates this point of view with the example of communicative category of mitigation which determines the communicative behavior of the speaker in a situation of possible conflict, prompting non-categorical and emotional restraint.
In conclusion, the author points out that communicative categories, unlike communicative concepts, can manifest themselves in discourse not only by means of special speech formulas, but also with the help of non-verbal ways of interaction such as gaze, intonation, gesture, etc.

After reading the article I would like to clarify the following two things.
    1. Which communicative categories, besides the category of mitigation, exist?
    2. Is there any interaction between communicative categories and grammatical categories of a language?
